Delivery and Shipping

Shipping Policy

Shipping is expensive, and it gets more expensive almost every year. We are not going to pretend otherwise. What we can tell you is that we work hard to find the most reliable and affordable way to get your order to you, and we pass along free shipping wherever it makes sense.

Free shipping on any order with two or more items. The one exception is bulk items, meaning the large or heavy products that have to move by freight or oversized parcel. If your cart qualifies, free shipping is applied automatically at checkout.

Why two items and not a dollar amount?

Most stores set free shipping at a dollar threshold. That works when you sell light things like clothing. We don't. We ship soil, amendments, and heavy real goods that are expensive and awkward to move, so a dollar minimum doesn't reflect what shipping actually costs us.

We are a small business with no outside financial backing, and we are not Amazon. We manufacture, pack, and ship everything in house so we can control quality, which means real people picking, boxing, taping, and labeling every order, and that means real jobs. When we ship a single item for free, the only way to cover it is to raise prices across the board, and we would rather not do that. Asking for two or more items on free orders lets us keep prices lower for everyone and keep shipping sustainable. We hate high shipping costs as much as you do, and this is the fairest way we have found to keep them down.

Carriers

We ship with FedEx, UPS, and USPS, and we pick the carrier that gets your order to you reliably at the best cost. We cannot guarantee a specific carrier unless you arrange it with us ahead of time.

PO Boxes

Orders to PO Boxes often cost more and usually do not qualify for free shipping. Use a physical address to avoid delays and added fees.

Outside the Continental US

We ship to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the US Virgin Islands. Free shipping generally does not apply to large or bulky items going to these destinations, though Hawaii and Alaska have more flexibility depending on carrier policy. Rates are quoted at checkout or on request.

Canada

We ship select items to Canada. Canadian customers need to choose "UPS Standard Shipping to Canada" at checkout so your order clears customs cleanly and you avoid surprise brokerage fees. Orders placed with other methods can be delayed or rejected at the border.

Vendor-Fulfilled Items

Some products ship directly from our vendor partners and show their own estimated ship dates on the product page. Questions about these go to support@buildasoil.com.

Freight Shipments

Freight orders arrive on pallets by box truck or semi. We assume you need liftgate service unless you tell us otherwise.

Inspect every freight shipment before you sign. Count the packages and check for damage. Signing the delivery receipt confirms the order arrived complete and undamaged, so note any problem on the receipt before you sign it.

Full Truckloads

Full truckload (FTL) orders are custom quoted after checkout based on your location, order volume, and how the truck will be unloaded.

  • Let us know if you have a dock, forklift, or other unloading equipment.
  • Tell us if you need liftgate or manual unload service.
  • Email support@buildasoil.com ahead of time for an FTL quote.
Order Tracking

We email tracking as soon as your order ships. If it does not arrive, check buildasoil.aftership.com with your order details, or email support@buildasoil.com.

Shipping Protection

This optional add-on at checkout covers your shipment against loss, theft, and damage, and we fast-track those claims for replacement or resolution. Even with protection, photos and documentation help us move carrier claims along faster.

Claims

Send all claims to support@buildasoil.com. We do not process claims by phone.

Include:

  • A description of the issue
  • Photos or video of the damage, or of missing or incorrect items
  • Images of the packaging and labels

Hold onto the packaging and any damaged items until the claim is resolved, since carriers may require an inspection.

Claim deadlines

  • Damage or missing items: within 60 days of delivery
  • Incorrect products: within 60 days of shipment
  • Lost or misdelivered packages: within 60 days of shipment
Once Your Order Leaves Our Facility

We help with every carrier claim we can. But once an order is in the carrier's hands, we cannot control delays, damage, or misdelivery, and the carrier makes the final call on claims.

Soil building kit

Build your own living soil by hand

Every ingredient for about 9 cubic feet of BuildASoil living soil, bagged, labeled, and shipped to your door with a 100 gallon pot to mix it in. You open every bag, break up every clod, and make it fresh, the way you would cook a meal from scratch instead of heating one up.

5.0 out of 5 from 121 reviews, 98 percent would recommend it

Why build it yourself

The same recipe, made by your hands

There is a difference between soil you bought and soil you made. Growers who build their first batch tend to say the same thing afterward: they understand their soil now, and they grow differently because of it.

When we make soil here, it comes from bulk. Raw materials by the yard, weighed out, run through a mixer, and bagged. It is consistent and it is good, and it is how we keep 3.0 affordable.

Every ingredient in this kit is bagged, labeled, and packed by hand so you can do what our mixer does, yourself. You will smell the compost, feel the pumice, and crumble every clod of BuildAFlower between your fingers. It all shows up at your door. The only work left is the part worth doing.

From the box to your first plant

Mix it, cook it, plant it, keep it

About two weeks, start to finish

One afternoon of mixing, a week or two of waiting, and a soil you can reuse for years.

1

One afternoon

Mix

Everything goes into the 100 gallon pot. Wet the peat, break up the compost by hand, and turn it until it is even.

2

1 to 2 weeks

Cook

Keep it moist and covered. The Kashi Gold gets the biology working and the mix settles into soil.

3

When it has cooked

Plant

Plant, mulch the surface, and top dress the mulch with the rest of your Kashi Gold.

4

Every run after

Keep it

Between runs you reamend it instead of throwing it out. This is soil you build once.

One bag of Kashi Gold, two jobs: half goes into the mix to get the cook going, and the other half is saved for top dressing your mulch while you grow.

How to build it

The recipe

Four bulk ingredients by volume, then the nutrients, minerals, and Kashi Gold worked through by hand.

4

cu ft peat moss

2

cu ft BuildAFlower

2

cu ft pumice

1

cu ft rice hulls

  1. 01

Set up the pot where the soil can cook. The 100 gallon pot is your mixing tub, so no tarp needed. Set it where the soil can sit, cook, and come together for the next 1 to 2 weeks.

  2. 02

Wet the peat first. Break up all four bags of peat in the pot. Mix 1/8 to 1/2 teaspoon of Quillaja per gallon of water and work it in until the peat takes water instead of shedding it.

  3. 03

Add the bulk ingredients. Pour in the BuildAFlower, pumice, rice hulls, and charged biochar, crumbling every clod of BuildAFlower between your fingers as it goes in. Order does not matter. Turn it over until you cannot see layers.

  4. 04

Add the Nutrient Kit, Mineral Kit, and 1 lb of Kashi Gold. Sprinkle them across the surface a little at a time and mix as you go so they spread evenly through the whole batch. Seal the other pound of Kashi Gold and set it aside.

  5. 05

Moisten and cover. Bring it to the feel of a wrung out sponge, cover it, and let it cook for 1 to 2 weeks. Check it now and then and keep it from drying out.

  6. 06

Plant, mulch, and top dress. Plant into your finished soil and mulch the surface. Sprinkle the saved Kashi Gold over the mulch at 2 to 4 tablespoons per square foot and water it in lightly.

Store your saved Kashi Gold sealed, cool, and dry, somewhere animals cannot get to it. Dogs, chickens, and mice will find an open bag and eat the whole thing.

Questions

What people ask us

How much soil does it make, and what will it fill?

About 9 cubic feet, roughly 67 gallons. That is enough to fill four 15 gallon pots with a little left over, or about two thirds of the 100 gallon pot it comes with.

How long before I can plant?

Give it 1 to 2 weeks to cook, kept moist and covered. Planting into raw, just mixed soil is the most common mistake with a kit like this. Waiting is the easy part.

How do I use the Kashi Gold?

Split the 2 lb bag. Mix 1 lb into your batch along with the Nutrient Kit and Mineral Kit to get the cook going. Save the other pound for later: once you are growing, sprinkle 2 to 4 tablespoons per square foot over the mulch and water it in lightly.

Can I reuse this soil?

That is the whole idea. Between runs, reamend it with the Re-amend Old Soil Nutrient Kit and plant again. The pumice holds its structure, so the soil keeps going run after run.

Where does it ship?

Free shipping to the lower 48 states. For Alaska, Hawaii, and other destinations, see our shipping policy.

I have questions while I am mixing. Who do I ask?

Us. Everyone on our team grows. Use the chat on the site or our contact page and we will help you through it.

My Grow Went From OK to As It Should Be

I have grown for about 3 years. Started a complete novice, ordering seeds from across the world, secret packing, hope they would make it here.

It was ok, but when I took a chance on this soil, my garden was transformed and I had never seen such healthy growth. I'm on my second round with the same soil and 4 girls can hardly fit in a 3X3. The main stalk is almost as thick as a sharpie marker, thicker that a pencil.

This kit will not let you down!
