Delivery and Shipping

Shipping Policy

Shipping is expensive, and it gets more expensive almost every year. We are not going to pretend otherwise. What we can tell you is that we work hard to find the most reliable and affordable way to get your order to you, and we pass along free shipping wherever it makes sense.

Free shipping on any order with two or more items. The one exception is bulk items, meaning the large or heavy products that have to move by freight or oversized parcel. If your cart qualifies, free shipping is applied automatically at checkout.

Why two items and not a dollar amount?

Most stores set free shipping at a dollar threshold. That works when you sell light things like clothing. We don't. We ship soil, amendments, and heavy real goods that are expensive and awkward to move, so a dollar minimum doesn't reflect what shipping actually costs us.

We are a small business with no outside financial backing, and we are not Amazon. We manufacture, pack, and ship everything in house so we can control quality, which means real people picking, boxing, taping, and labeling every order, and that means real jobs. When we ship a single item for free, the only way to cover it is to raise prices across the board, and we would rather not do that. Asking for two or more items on free orders lets us keep prices lower for everyone and keep shipping sustainable. We hate high shipping costs as much as you do, and this is the fairest way we have found to keep them down.

Carriers

We ship with FedEx, UPS, and USPS, and we pick the carrier that gets your order to you reliably at the best cost. We cannot guarantee a specific carrier unless you arrange it with us ahead of time.

PO Boxes

Orders to PO Boxes often cost more and usually do not qualify for free shipping. Use a physical address to avoid delays and added fees.

Outside the Continental US

We ship to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the US Virgin Islands. Free shipping generally does not apply to large or bulky items going to these destinations, though Hawaii and Alaska have more flexibility depending on carrier policy. Rates are quoted at checkout or on request.

Canada

We ship select items to Canada. Canadian customers need to choose "UPS Standard Shipping to Canada" at checkout so your order clears customs cleanly and you avoid surprise brokerage fees. Orders placed with other methods can be delayed or rejected at the border.

Vendor-Fulfilled Items

Some products ship directly from our vendor partners and show their own estimated ship dates on the product page. Questions about these go to support@buildasoil.com.

Freight Shipments

Freight orders arrive on pallets by box truck or semi. We assume you need liftgate service unless you tell us otherwise.

Inspect every freight shipment before you sign. Count the packages and check for damage. Signing the delivery receipt confirms the order arrived complete and undamaged, so note any problem on the receipt before you sign it.

Full Truckloads

Full truckload (FTL) orders are custom quoted after checkout based on your location, order volume, and how the truck will be unloaded.

  • Let us know if you have a dock, forklift, or other unloading equipment.
  • Tell us if you need liftgate or manual unload service.
  • Email support@buildasoil.com ahead of time for an FTL quote.
Order Tracking

We email tracking as soon as your order ships. If it does not arrive, check buildasoil.aftership.com with your order details, or email support@buildasoil.com.

Shipping Protection

This optional add-on at checkout covers your shipment against loss, theft, and damage, and we fast-track those claims for replacement or resolution. Even with protection, photos and documentation help us move carrier claims along faster.

Claims

Send all claims to support@buildasoil.com. We do not process claims by phone.

Include:

  • A description of the issue
  • Photos or video of the damage, or of missing or incorrect items
  • Images of the packaging and labels

Hold onto the packaging and any damaged items until the claim is resolved, since carriers may require an inspection.

Claim deadlines

  • Damage or missing items: within 60 days of delivery
  • Incorrect products: within 60 days of shipment
  • Lost or misdelivered packages: within 60 days of shipment
Once Your Order Leaves Our Facility

We help with every carrier claim we can. But once an order is in the carrier's hands, we cannot control delays, damage, or misdelivery, and the carrier makes the final call on claims.

Complete Soil Building Kit

The Clackamas Coot recipe, in two bags

Everything that turns peat, aeration, and compost into a living soil: the Nutrient Kit and the Mineral Kit, sized to your bale. You bring the base, mix it once, let it rest, and plant.

10% offvs buying the two kits separately
9 to 18 cu ftof finished soil, by bale size

What is in the box

Two kits, packed separately

Rock dust holds natural moisture, so the minerals ship in their own bag and stay away from the raw nutrient meals until mixing day.

Nutrients

Nutrient Kit

2 cups per cubic foot

  • Crustacean mealCrab and shrimp. Nitrogen, calcium, and chitin.
  • Kelp mealPotassium and a broad spread of trace elements.
  • Neem cakeSlow nitrogen and organic matter for the soil life.
  • Gnarly BarleyMilled organic sprouted barley, lentil, and corn.
Minerals

Mineral Kit

4 cups per cubic foot

  • BuildASoil Basalt2 parts. Trace minerals that weather out slowly.
  • Gypsum1 part. Calcium and sulfur without moving pH.
  • Oyster shell flour1 part. Calcium that limes the peat into range.

No high phosphorus inputs, on purpose. The recipe leaves out heavy phosphorus amendments like bone meal so mycorrhizal fungi have a reason to partner with the roots.

The recipe

Equal thirds, plus the two kits

The base is one part each of peat, aeration, and compost. Every cubic foot of that base gets both kits.

1 partSphagnum peat mossOne bale, fluffed
1 partAerationPumice, rice hulls, lava rock, or perlite
1 partCompostKnown source, high quality
+ 2 cupsNutrient Kit per cubic foot
+ 4 cupsMineral Kit per cubic foot

If you use worm castings, keep them to 5 to 15% of the compost third. More than that can push sodium too high.

Kit size Peat (fluffed) Aeration Compost Finished soil
2.2 CF bale kit About 3 cu ft 3 cu ft 3 cu ft About 9 cu ft
3.0 CF bale kit About 4.67 cu ft 4.67 cu ft 4.67 cu ft About 14 cu ft
3.8 CF bale kit About 6 cu ft 6 cu ft 6 cu ft About 18 cu ft

Pick the kit that matches the peat bale you are buying. Rounding to the nearest cubic foot is fine.

How to build it

Mixing day to planting day

  1. Build the base. Equal parts peat, aeration, and compost.
  2. Add both kits. 2 cups of Nutrient Kit and 4 cups of Mineral Kit per cubic foot of base.
  3. Mix until uniform. No streaks of mineral, no pockets of meal.
  4. Moisten to field capacity. A squeezed handful holds its shape without dripping.
  5. Let it rest 1 to 2 weeks. Keep it slightly moist and turn it once if you can.
  6. Plant. Top dress with about 2 inches of worm castings if you have them.

Which one is right for you

Three ways to get this soil

This kit is for growers who want to source their own base. If you would rather have everything in one box, or skip the mixing entirely, those options are here too.

You are here

Complete Soil Building Kit

Both kits. You buy the peat, aeration, and compost locally and mix it yourself.

Turnkey

Take 'N Bake

The complete version. The base comes in the box with the kits, so you have every ingredient on mixing day and nothing to source.

Ready to plant

BuildASoil 3.0

Already mixed in Montrose. Open the bag and plant.

The recipe's author

Clackamas Coot gets paid on every kit

This recipe comes from Clackamas Coot, who has given a great deal to the growing community over the years. He is retired now, and 10% of the price of every kit goes to him.

Questions

Common questions

Does the kit include the peat, aeration, or compost?

No. This kit is the nutrients and minerals. If you want the base in the box too, get the Take 'N Bake.

Which size do I need?

Match it to your peat bale: 2.2 CF, 3.0 CF, or 3.8 CF. The table above shows how much finished soil each one makes. Our soil volume calculator tells you how much your containers or beds hold.

How long before I can plant?

Let it rest 1 to 2 weeks after mixing, kept slightly moist.

Can I buy the kits separately?

Yes. The Nutrient Kit and Mineral Kit are each sold on their own. Buying them together here costs 10% less.

I have a question that is not here.

My first purchase and grow

The complete soil building kit - Coot was amazing The soil I created from it smelled so fresh and fragrant and it looked amazing.

My grow started out fine and then I had a nap infestation. So things didn't come out exactly the way I wanted but now I'm looking for an entire kit that I can automate and start again. One that I don't have to open the door for more than once a week or two weeks.
