Delivery and Shipping

Shipping Policy

Shipping is expensive, and it gets more expensive almost every year. We are not going to pretend otherwise. What we can tell you is that we work hard to find the most reliable and affordable way to get your order to you, and we pass along free shipping wherever it makes sense.

Free shipping on any order with two or more items. The one exception is bulk items, meaning the large or heavy products that have to move by freight or oversized parcel. If your cart qualifies, free shipping is applied automatically at checkout.

Why two items and not a dollar amount?

Most stores set free shipping at a dollar threshold. That works when you sell light things like clothing. We don't. We ship soil, amendments, and heavy real goods that are expensive and awkward to move, so a dollar minimum doesn't reflect what shipping actually costs us.

We are a small business with no outside financial backing, and we are not Amazon. We manufacture, pack, and ship everything in house so we can control quality, which means real people picking, boxing, taping, and labeling every order, and that means real jobs. When we ship a single item for free, the only way to cover it is to raise prices across the board, and we would rather not do that. Asking for two or more items on free orders lets us keep prices lower for everyone and keep shipping sustainable. We hate high shipping costs as much as you do, and this is the fairest way we have found to keep them down.

Carriers

We ship with FedEx, UPS, and USPS, and we pick the carrier that gets your order to you reliably at the best cost. We cannot guarantee a specific carrier unless you arrange it with us ahead of time.

PO Boxes

Orders to PO Boxes often cost more and usually do not qualify for free shipping. Use a physical address to avoid delays and added fees.

Outside the Continental US

We ship to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the US Virgin Islands. Free shipping generally does not apply to large or bulky items going to these destinations, though Hawaii and Alaska have more flexibility depending on carrier policy. Rates are quoted at checkout or on request.

Canada

We ship select items to Canada. Canadian customers need to choose "UPS Standard Shipping to Canada" at checkout so your order clears customs cleanly and you avoid surprise brokerage fees. Orders placed with other methods can be delayed or rejected at the border.

Vendor-Fulfilled Items

Some products ship directly from our vendor partners and show their own estimated ship dates on the product page. Questions about these go to support@buildasoil.com.

Freight Shipments

Freight orders arrive on pallets by box truck or semi. We assume you need liftgate service unless you tell us otherwise.

Inspect every freight shipment before you sign. Count the packages and check for damage. Signing the delivery receipt confirms the order arrived complete and undamaged, so note any problem on the receipt before you sign it.

Full Truckloads

Full truckload (FTL) orders are custom quoted after checkout based on your location, order volume, and how the truck will be unloaded.

  • Let us know if you have a dock, forklift, or other unloading equipment.
  • Tell us if you need liftgate or manual unload service.
  • Email support@buildasoil.com ahead of time for an FTL quote.
Order Tracking

We email tracking as soon as your order ships. If it does not arrive, check buildasoil.aftership.com with your order details, or email support@buildasoil.com.

Shipping Protection

This optional add-on at checkout covers your shipment against loss, theft, and damage, and we fast-track those claims for replacement or resolution. Even with protection, photos and documentation help us move carrier claims along faster.

Claims

Send all claims to support@buildasoil.com. We do not process claims by phone.

Include:

  • A description of the issue
  • Photos or video of the damage, or of missing or incorrect items
  • Images of the packaging and labels

Hold onto the packaging and any damaged items until the claim is resolved, since carriers may require an inspection.

Claim deadlines

  • Damage or missing items: within 60 days of delivery
  • Incorrect products: within 60 days of shipment
  • Lost or misdelivered packages: within 60 days of shipment
Once Your Order Leaves Our Facility

We help with every carrier claim we can. But once an order is in the carrier's hands, we cannot control delays, damage, or misdelivery, and the carrier makes the final call on claims.

Description

Small-batch vermicompost from Colorado Worm Company

The best worm castings we have ever carried.

Most bagged castings run forty to fifty dollars and you never quite know what is in the bag. These are different, and yes, they cost more. They come from a single family farm in Western Colorado, made in small batches, restocked fresh every couple of weeks, and alive with a level of biology and nutrient density we could not find anywhere else. We were impressed enough to make a full video about them and pay for lab testing to prove it.

★★★★★ 4.9 (580 reviews) Alive in every bag Fresh every 2 weeks
Yes, it costs more

Here is exactly what you are paying for.

We are not going to pretend this is a bargain bag. It is a premium product with a premium price, and every dollar has a reason behind it.

1

It tested higher, so you use less

We paid for the lab testing ourselves. The people who make these castings did not, because we wanted the real numbers before we stood behind them. It came out well ahead of other bagged castings on nutrient density. Growers tell us over and over that a little goes a long way, which stretches every bag further than the sticker suggests.

2

A living ecosystem, included

Alex hand-adds Red Wigglers to every bag, and each one also carries cocoons along with beneficial life like predator mites and rove beetles. Bought separately, that kind of biology can run hundreds of dollars. Here it comes right along with the compost, ready to take hold in your soil.

3

Real compost bedding, not dressed-up peat

Most repackagers bed their worms on dark sedge peat that looks like finished castings. Colorado Worm Company beds theirs on fully finished farm compost, the method taught by ClackamasCoot. It is the difference between something that looks the part and something that is the real thing.

4

Fresh and fast-moving, never stale stock

Alex brings down fresh castings every couple of weeks and screens about a month's supply at a time, which is how you get the best moisture, texture, and packing. It moves fast and does not sit long, so what reaches you is recently made, moist, and full of life instead of last year's leftovers.

Where it comes from

One family, one farm, doing it all by hand.

Colorado Worm Company is Alex and his family on a homestead of more than forty acres along the Uncompahgre River south of Montrose. No employees, no shortcuts. Just a true mom and pop operation that decided to make some of the best castings in the country, and then went and did it.

Alex trucked in a load of high quality apple crates and insulated an entire barn to keep the worms happy through Colorado winters. He runs a modest tractor and a trommel that gently separates the finished castings from the worms. He builds windrow thermal compost, turns it, and only once it is fully finished does it become the bedding and feed for his Red Wigglers, who then get fed BuildASoil products on top of that. There are horses on the property, a closed loop system, and about as small a carbon footprint as you will find.

He even drops a few live worms into each bag by hand as he fills it. A big operation could never do that, and that is the point. We have asked Alex more than once to scale up so we could bring the price down, and every time the answer is no. Quality and family come first for him, always. He likes knowing there are living worms riding along inside every bag of his compost, and once you have used it, you understand why.

This is what craft looks like. It is why the results are what they are, and it is why we are proud to carry it.

Do not take our word for it

We funded independent lab testing ourselves and put the full comparison against other castings on video. See the numbers and decide for yourself.

Guaranteed to arrive moist, rich, and alive. If it does not outperform your expectations, we will send a replacement bag or a full refund. Simple as that.

Proof you can see

You do not need a microscope.

There is a lot of talk about putting castings under a scope and guaranteeing a microbe count. We think most of that is noise. Biology is always changing, so a number on a certificate does not tell you much by the time the bag reaches you.

The simpler truth is that you can see life with your own eyes. A dry, lifeless pile looks exactly like what it is. A bag of Colorado Worm Company is the opposite: dark, moist, rich, and clearly alive. Between plain castings scooped from a warehouse and something like this, made from finished thermal compost that is visibly teeming with life, there is no contest for which one is more biologically alive.

One honest note on the worms Alex adds by hand. They burrow and move around, so you may not spot them right away, and a few may not survive the trip. Do not be disappointed if you do not see them wriggling the moment you open the bag. The cocoons ride along too, and once you work this into your garden, worms will start to appear. You will have a living ecosystem in your soil. That is our promise.

"I've got a bag of CoWoCo from December 2023 that's about 50% used and there's always a few worms in the bag. Absolutely amazing."

How to use it

A little goes a long way.

Top dress

This stuff is potent, so a light half inch layer goes a long way. Refresh it every two weeks to once a month through veg and flower. You can go heavier without burning, but with castings this strong you usually do not need to.

Compost tea

Add about 1 cup per 5 gallons of aerated water for an overall nutrient and biological boost, brew no more than 24 hours, and apply straight to the root zone.

Sizing note: the 2 Gallon bag is about 10 lbs, the 1/2 Cubic Foot about 20 lbs, and the 1 Cubic Foot about 40 lbs.

Choose your size

Pick the amount that fits your grow.

2 Gallon

About 10 lbs $36

1/2 Cubic Foot

About 20 lbs $64
Best value per pound

1 Cubic Foot

About 40 lbs $125

Because a little goes such a long way, even the premium price stretches further than a bag of standard castings. Buy the size that matches how much soil you are feeding, and free shipping kicks in any time you have two or more eligible items in your cart, including this one.

Put the best in your soil.

When you buy this, you are backing a real family farm doing meticulous, hands-on work, and you are putting the finest castings we have ever tested into your garden. Guaranteed to arrive alive, or we make it right.
