Caring for your Wine Cap spawn and straw

• Open the shipping box soon after arrival
• Unfold the top of the spawn bag so there is some air space above the block
• Make sure the filter patch on the bag is exposed and not pressed against plastic or cardboard, so the organism can breathe
• If you are not ready to build your bed right away, keep the spawn in the refrigerator and use within about six months
• Store the straw in a dry, cool area until you are ready to lay out your bed

Instructions for use

1. Choose a suitable spot in your garden where the bed can stay in contact with the soil. Gently rake aside leaves or debris until you are down to bare soil or grass.
2. Spread a thin layer of straw over the soil, about one inch deep. This is your base food layer for the fungi.
3. Break up the Wine Cap sawdust spawn into small chunks with clean hands. Evenly sprinkle the spawn across the entire straw layer so you get good coverage.
4. Add a second layer of straw or other woody material on top, about two to three inches thick. You want the spawn sandwiched between layers of carbon rich material.
5. Water the bed thoroughly so that the straw is moist all the way through but not flooded.
6. Keep the bed evenly moist during the establishment period, especially in hot or dry weather. Over time you can top up the bed with fresh straw or wood chips to feed the growing mycelium.

With a little moisture and patience, the Wine Cap mycelium will begin to knit through the straw and soil, helping to transform your garden into a richer, more biologically active space. Mushrooms are a welcome bonus, but the real win is the long lasting boost to soil life that supports every crop you grow.
