🌱 How to Use Whole Soap Nuts for Garden Care

Discover the natural way to protect your plants with our organic saponins

You can make fresh or concentrated, see below.

🌿 How to Make Fresh Cold Soap Nut Liquid

  1. Soaking:

    • Cold Soak: Place the deseeded soap nut shells in a jar of water. The general ratio is about 10 shells to 6 cups of water, similar to boiling. You can adjust based on the desired concentration. (You can use the small cloth bag that comes with your Soap Nuts.)
    • Duration: Let the shells soak for at least 8 hours, or overnight. The longer they soak, the more saponins will leach into the water, making the solution more potent.
  2. Straining:

    • If you used the cloth bag, just pull it out, it not then strain.
    • After soaking, strain the solution to remove the soap nut shells. The resulting liquid will be less concentrated than the boiled version but still effective.
  3. Usage:

    • The solution can be used similarly to the boiled version in gardening for pest control, as a fungicide, and for cleaning purposes. Due to its milder concentration, you might need to use it more frequently or in larger quantities for the desired effect.
  4. Storage:

    • Store the unused portion of the soap nut liquid in the refrigerator. It doesn't have preservatives, so it can spoil or ferment if left at room temperature for too long. Use within a week for best results.

Tips:

  • Warm Water: Using warm water (not hot) can slightly speed up the extraction process.
  • Agitation: Occasionally shake or stir the solution during the soaking process to help release more saponins from the soap nuts.
  • Freshness Check: Before using, check the solution for any off smell or signs of spoilage. If it smells sour or unpleasant, it's best to discard it and make a fresh batch.

This method is gentler and requires no heat, making it energy efficient and convenient. However, remember that the potency and effectiveness might vary compared to the boiled version, so adjustments in application might be necessary.

💾 Storage: Use fresh, or store in a cool, dark place for up to a week.

🌿 How to Make Concentrated Boiled Soapnut Liquid

Follow these simple steps to unlock the full saponin power of soap nuts...

    Making Liquid Solution:

      • Boil: Place a handful of deseeded soap nut shells into a pot of water. The amount of water will depend on how concentrated you want the solution. A general guideline is about 10 shells to 6 cups of water.
      • Simmer: Let the mixture simmer for approximately 30 minutes to an hour. This process extracts the saponins and creates a soapy liquid.
      • Cool and Strain: Let the solution cool down and then strain it to remove the shells.

    1. Dilution and Frequency:

      • Dilution: For general use, dilute the solution as needed. A common ratio is 1 part soap nut liquid to 10 parts water, but this can vary depending on the application.
      • Frequency: Use it weekly or when you notice pests or mildew. It's a gentle, natural product, but it's still wise to observe how your plants respond and adjust usage accordingly.

    2. Composting:

      • After boiling, the used soap nut shells can be added to your compost pile. They decompose well and add to the nutrient content of the compost.

      🌼 Application in the Garden

      1. 🌧️ Spray on Plants: Apply the solution to the foliage, covering both top and underside of leaves.
      2. 🕗 Best Time: Spray early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid leaf burn.
      3. 📅 Frequency: Use once a week or as needed, based on pest situation.
      4. 🌼🍃Combine with other natural products to create specific formulas.
      5. 💧🌿 Great for emulsifying Neem Oil.
      6. 🛡️🦠🌱Effective in eliminating Powdery Mildew.

💾 Storage: Use fresh, or store in a cool, dark place for up to a week.
