Delivery and Shipping

Shipping Policy

Shipping is expensive, and it gets more expensive almost every year. We are not going to pretend otherwise. What we can tell you is that we work hard to find the most reliable and affordable way to get your order to you, and we pass along free shipping wherever it makes sense.

Free shipping on any order with two or more items. The one exception is bulk items, meaning the large or heavy products that have to move by freight or oversized parcel. If your cart qualifies, free shipping is applied automatically at checkout.

Why two items and not a dollar amount?

Most stores set free shipping at a dollar threshold. That works when you sell light things like clothing. We don't. We ship soil, amendments, and heavy real goods that are expensive and awkward to move, so a dollar minimum doesn't reflect what shipping actually costs us.

We are a small business with no outside financial backing, and we are not Amazon. We manufacture, pack, and ship everything in house so we can control quality, which means real people picking, boxing, taping, and labeling every order, and that means real jobs. When we ship a single item for free, the only way to cover it is to raise prices across the board, and we would rather not do that. Asking for two or more items on free orders lets us keep prices lower for everyone and keep shipping sustainable. We hate high shipping costs as much as you do, and this is the fairest way we have found to keep them down.

Carriers

We ship with FedEx, UPS, and USPS, and we pick the carrier that gets your order to you reliably at the best cost. We cannot guarantee a specific carrier unless you arrange it with us ahead of time.

PO Boxes

Orders to PO Boxes often cost more and usually do not qualify for free shipping. Use a physical address to avoid delays and added fees.

Outside the Continental US

We ship to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the US Virgin Islands. Free shipping generally does not apply to large or bulky items going to these destinations, though Hawaii and Alaska have more flexibility depending on carrier policy. Rates are quoted at checkout or on request.

Canada

We ship select items to Canada. Canadian customers need to choose "UPS Standard Shipping to Canada" at checkout so your order clears customs cleanly and you avoid surprise brokerage fees. Orders placed with other methods can be delayed or rejected at the border.

Vendor-Fulfilled Items

Some products ship directly from our vendor partners and show their own estimated ship dates on the product page. Questions about these go to support@buildasoil.com.

Freight Shipments

Freight orders arrive on pallets by box truck or semi. We assume you need liftgate service unless you tell us otherwise.

Inspect every freight shipment before you sign. Count the packages and check for damage. Signing the delivery receipt confirms the order arrived complete and undamaged, so note any problem on the receipt before you sign it.

Full Truckloads

Full truckload (FTL) orders are custom quoted after checkout based on your location, order volume, and how the truck will be unloaded.

  • Let us know if you have a dock, forklift, or other unloading equipment.
  • Tell us if you need liftgate or manual unload service.
  • Email support@buildasoil.com ahead of time for an FTL quote.
Order Tracking

We email tracking as soon as your order ships. If it does not arrive, check buildasoil.aftership.com with your order details, or email support@buildasoil.com.

Shipping Protection

This optional add-on at checkout covers your shipment against loss, theft, and damage, and we fast-track those claims for replacement or resolution. Even with protection, photos and documentation help us move carrier claims along faster.

Claims

Send all claims to support@buildasoil.com. We do not process claims by phone.

Include:

  • A description of the issue
  • Photos or video of the damage, or of missing or incorrect items
  • Images of the packaging and labels

Hold onto the packaging and any damaged items until the claim is resolved, since carriers may require an inspection.

Claim deadlines

  • Damage or missing items: within 60 days of delivery
  • Incorrect products: within 60 days of shipment
  • Lost or misdelivered packages: within 60 days of shipment
Once Your Order Leaves Our Facility

We help with every carrier claim we can. But once an order is in the carrier's hands, we cannot control delays, damage, or misdelivery, and the carrier makes the final call on claims.

Clackamas Coots style nutrient kit

One 8 lb bag makes one 9 cubic foot batch of living soil

The nutrient half of the Coot's classic recipe, premeasured for a third of a yard. You supply the peat, aeration, and compost. Pair it with the 27 lb Mineral Kit and the batch is complete. 10% of what you pay goes to the Coot himself. Read why.

8 lbof premixed nutrients
9 cu ftof finished soil per bag (about 67 gallons)
2 cupsper cubic foot, or about 4 tbsp per gallon

One batch

What one bag builds

Equal parts base mix, 3 cubic feet of each, plus one Nutrient Kit and one 27 lb Mineral Kit. Use the whole bag.

3 cu ftSphagnum peat moss
3 cu ftAeration: pumice, rice hulls, lava rock, or perlite
3 cu ftCompost, worm castings, or leaf mold
Base mix you supply
+ 8 lb Nutrient KitThis bag. Crustacean meal, kelp, neem cake, Gnarly Barley.
+ 27 lb Mineral KitBasalt, gypsum, oyster shell flour. Sold separately.
= 9 cu ft of living soilAbout 67 gallons. Fills a 3 ft by 3 ft bed one foot deep.

A 2 cubic foot compressed peat bale fluffs to about 3 cubic feet, which is exactly one batch worth of peat.

In the bag

Four ingredients, premixed

Nitrogen and calcium

Crustacean meal

Crab and shrimp shell. A slow, steady source of nitrogen and calcium, plus chitin for the soil food web to work through.

Potassium and trace elements

Kelp meal

Ascophyllum nodosum. Potassium plus the broad spread of trace elements that come with ocean-grown seaweed.

Slow-release nitrogen

Neem cake

The pressed seed meal left after oil extraction. Organic matter and nitrogen that breaks down over the life of the soil.

Enzymes and food for biology

Coots Gnarly Barley

Milled organic sprouted barley, lentil, and corn. The Coot developed this blend himself and it is the ingredient that makes this his recipe.

What is not in the bag. No soft rock phosphate, no fish bone meal, no heavy phosphorus inputs. That is on purpose. The phosphorus in this recipe comes from what is naturally in the ingredients, which is how the Coot builds soil.

Rates

Smaller and bigger batches

The rate is 2 cups per cubic foot of base mix. One cup weighs 6 to 8 ounces. Building less than 9 cubic feet? Measure what you need and keep the rest sealed and dry for the next batch.

Batch size Nutrient Kit Mineral Kit
1 gallon About 4 tablespoons About 1/2 cup
1 cubic foot 2 cups 4 cups
3 cubic feet 6 cups 12 cups
9 cubic feet 1 bag (8 lb) 1 bag (27 lb)
18 cubic feet 2 bags 2 bags (27 lb)
27 cubic feet (1 yard) 3 bags 1 bag (80 lb)

How to build it

Five steps

  1. Make the base. Combine equal parts peat, aeration, and compost or castings. For one bag, that is 3 cubic feet of each.
  2. Add both kits. Pour in the whole Nutrient Kit and the Mineral Kit and mix until the color is even all the way through.
  3. Moisten to field capacity. A squeezed handful should hold its shape without dripping.
  4. Let it rest 1 to 2 weeks. Keep it slightly moist and turn it once if you can.
  5. Plant. Top dress with about 2 inches of worm castings and water as usual. Aloe or botanical teas are optional.

Pairs with

The Mineral Kit

This bag is half of the recipe. The 27 lb Mineral Kit is the other half: basalt for trace minerals, plus gypsum and oyster shell flour for calcium and to balance the acidity of the peat. They ship as two bags so moisture in the rock dust stays away from the raw nutrients until you mix.

Want both in one order? The Coot Approved Complete Soil Building Kit includes the nutrients and minerals together, sized by peat bale.

Where your money goes

10% to the Coot

Every bag supports the man who wrote the recipe

Clackamas Coot spent decades teaching growers how to build soil that feeds itself, and he gave nearly all of it away for free on forums, in videos, and in conversations with anyone who asked. A lot of what this community knows about living soil traces back to him, including a lot of what we know at BuildASoil.

He is retired now. This kit is authorized by him and built to his recipe, including the Gnarly Barley he developed with us. 10% of the income from every Nutrient Kit goes directly to him. If his work helped your garden, this is a direct way to give some back.

Questions

Common questions

How much soil does one bag make?

9 cubic feet of finished soil, about 67 gallons, when you add it to 9 cubic feet of base mix along with one 27 lb Mineral Kit.

I only need a few cubic feet. Is this still the right bag?

Yes. Use 2 cups per cubic foot and store the rest sealed and dry. It keeps until your next batch or your next round of recycling old soil.

Do I need the Mineral Kit too?

Yes. This bag is the nutrient half of the recipe. The Mineral Kit supplies the rock dust and calcium, and it balances the acidity of the peat. Without it the recipe is incomplete.

Why are the nutrients and minerals in separate bags?

Rock dust holds moisture. Keeping it apart from the raw nutrients until mixing day keeps both in better shape on the shelf.

Do I have to wait 1 to 2 weeks before planting?

Yes. The rest gives the fresh amendments time to break down before roots move in. Keep the pile slightly moist and turn it once if you can.

Yum!

A cup here or 2 there, and the plants are thriving. Best base regime possible. And AND it smells amazing. Years ago the smell was 'tangyier' lol and much more unique and I miss that but its still such a good smelling amendment lol.
