Delivery and Shipping

Shipping Policy

Shipping is expensive, and it gets more expensive almost every year. We are not going to pretend otherwise. What we can tell you is that we work hard to find the most reliable and affordable way to get your order to you, and we pass along free shipping wherever it makes sense.

Free shipping on any order with two or more items. The one exception is bulk items, meaning the large or heavy products that have to move by freight or oversized parcel. If your cart qualifies, free shipping is applied automatically at checkout.

Why two items and not a dollar amount?

Most stores set free shipping at a dollar threshold. That works when you sell light things like clothing. We don't. We ship soil, amendments, and heavy real goods that are expensive and awkward to move, so a dollar minimum doesn't reflect what shipping actually costs us.

We are a small business with no outside financial backing, and we are not Amazon. We manufacture, pack, and ship everything in house so we can control quality, which means real people picking, boxing, taping, and labeling every order, and that means real jobs. When we ship a single item for free, the only way to cover it is to raise prices across the board, and we would rather not do that. Asking for two or more items on free orders lets us keep prices lower for everyone and keep shipping sustainable. We hate high shipping costs as much as you do, and this is the fairest way we have found to keep them down.

Carriers

We ship with FedEx, UPS, and USPS, and we pick the carrier that gets your order to you reliably at the best cost. We cannot guarantee a specific carrier unless you arrange it with us ahead of time.

PO Boxes

Orders to PO Boxes often cost more and usually do not qualify for free shipping. Use a physical address to avoid delays and added fees.

Outside the Continental US

We ship to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the US Virgin Islands. Free shipping generally does not apply to large or bulky items going to these destinations, though Hawaii and Alaska have more flexibility depending on carrier policy. Rates are quoted at checkout or on request.

Canada

We ship select items to Canada. Canadian customers need to choose "UPS Standard Shipping to Canada" at checkout so your order clears customs cleanly and you avoid surprise brokerage fees. Orders placed with other methods can be delayed or rejected at the border.

Vendor-Fulfilled Items

Some products ship directly from our vendor partners and show their own estimated ship dates on the product page. Questions about these go to support@buildasoil.com.

Freight Shipments

Freight orders arrive on pallets by box truck or semi. We assume you need liftgate service unless you tell us otherwise.

Inspect every freight shipment before you sign. Count the packages and check for damage. Signing the delivery receipt confirms the order arrived complete and undamaged, so note any problem on the receipt before you sign it.

Full Truckloads

Full truckload (FTL) orders are custom quoted after checkout based on your location, order volume, and how the truck will be unloaded.

  • Let us know if you have a dock, forklift, or other unloading equipment.
  • Tell us if you need liftgate or manual unload service.
  • Email support@buildasoil.com ahead of time for an FTL quote.
Order Tracking

We email tracking as soon as your order ships. If it does not arrive, check buildasoil.aftership.com with your order details, or email support@buildasoil.com.

Shipping Protection

This optional add-on at checkout covers your shipment against loss, theft, and damage, and we fast-track those claims for replacement or resolution. Even with protection, photos and documentation help us move carrier claims along faster.

Claims

Send all claims to support@buildasoil.com. We do not process claims by phone.

Include:

  • A description of the issue
  • Photos or video of the damage, or of missing or incorrect items
  • Images of the packaging and labels

Hold onto the packaging and any damaged items until the claim is resolved, since carriers may require an inspection.

Claim deadlines

  • Damage or missing items: within 60 days of delivery
  • Incorrect products: within 60 days of shipment
  • Lost or misdelivered packages: within 60 days of shipment
Once Your Order Leaves Our Facility

We help with every carrier claim we can. But once an order is in the carrier's hands, we cannot control delays, damage, or misdelivery, and the carrier makes the final call on claims.

Mineral Kit for peat moss

The mineral half of a new peat moss soil

Canadian sphagnum peat is acidic straight out of the bale. This kit brings it into range and loads it with calcium, sulfur, and trace minerals: basalt, gypsum, and oyster shell flour in a 2 to 1 to 1 ratio. Mix it in with the Nutrient Kit and your base, and you have built a living soil.

Is this the right mineral kit?

This kit is built for new soil. Peat or coco coir, same kit, same rate.

This kit

A new batch built on peat moss

You are mixing fresh soil from scratch with Canadian sphagnum peat as the base. The oyster shell flour in here is sized to lime that peat.

Same rate

A custom mix with coco coir

Living soil is designed around peat moss, and it performs best that way. Many growers build their own mix with coco, often half coco and half peat. This kit works there too, at the same 4 cups per cubic foot.

Different kit

Re-amending used soil

Soil you already built was limed when you made it. Re-amending calls for a lighter mineral mix, not a second full liming.

See all soil building kits

What is in it

Three minerals, two to one to one

Every bag is mixed to the same recipe. Half of it is rock dust for the long game, and half of it is calcium in two forms to balance the peat.

2parts

BuildASoil Basalt

Trace minerals

Our favorite rock dust. A broad spread of trace elements that weather out slowly over the life of the soil. Highly paramagnetic.

1part

Gypsum

Calcium and sulfur

Calcium and sulfur without pushing pH, so it adds calcium on top of the liming instead of more liming.

1part

Oyster shell flour

Calcium and liming

Calcium carbonate. This is the part that lifts the pH of the peat and adds available calcium as it does.

By volume. A full bag is half basalt, a quarter gypsum, and a quarter oyster shell flour.

Why oyster shell

Why there is no dolomite in here

Most peat-based mixes are limed with dolomite because it is cheap and it moves pH. The problem is that dolomite carries calcium and magnesium together, and the two release at different rates. Once it is in the soil, the calcium to magnesium balance is out of your hands.

We lime with oyster shell flour instead and add calcium a second way with gypsum. You know exactly what went in, and if a soil test later shows magnesium running short, you can add it on its own at the rate you need.

Two bags, one soil

This kit is half the recipe

Minerals alone do not make a soil. You need the Nutrient Kit too. Both go into the same base at mixing time.

Your base

Peat, aeration, compost

The body of the soil. You source this or pick it up locally.

Nutrient Kit

Clackamas Coot style

The meals and organic inputs that feed the soil life and the plant.

Why two bags instead of one. Rock dust holds natural moisture. Packed in with raw nutrient meals, that moisture would start working on them in the bag. Keeping them separate means both arrive the way they left us.

Get both in the Complete Soil Building Kit Nutrient Kit on its own

How much

Coverage by size

Use 4 cups per cubic foot of finished soil, or about a half cup per gallon. Pick the bag that matches the batch you are building.

Size About Mixes into
27 lb 37 cups 9 cubic feet (1/3 yard)
40 lb 55 cups 14 cubic feet (1/2 yard)
80 lb 110 cups 27 cubic feet (1 yard)
2,000 lb tote Bulk 25 cubic yards
  1. Lay out your base. Peat, aeration, and compost, in the volume you are building.
  2. Add the Mineral Kit and the Nutrient Kit. Spread both across the base at their rates.
  3. Mix it all the way through. Turn it until you cannot see streaks of mineral. Uneven mixing is the most common reason one pot behaves differently from the next.

Questions

Common questions

Can I use this with coco coir?

Yes. We focus on peat moss because that is how living soil is designed, and a living soil built on coco is not quite as good. Many growers still make their own custom mix, often half coco and half peat, and this kit works for that. Use the same 4 cups per cubic foot.

Can I use it to re-amend soil I already have?

No. Your soil was limed when you built it. Re-amending calls for a lighter mineral mix, which you will find with our other soil building kits.

Do I need the Nutrient Kit too?

Yes, if you are building a complete soil. This kit covers the minerals. The Nutrient Kit covers the meals and organic inputs. The Complete Soil Building Kit gets you both for less than buying them separately.

Why are the minerals and nutrients in separate bags?

Rock dust carries natural moisture. Bagging it with raw nutrient meals would let that moisture start working on them before they ever reach your soil.
