Rice Hulls - Par Boiled
from $19.80
Rated 5.0 out of 5
180 Ratings
Based on 180 ratings
Par Boiled Rice Hulls by the bale or truckload. PBH Brand Approved for Organic Use
Studies have proven that rice hulls can efficiently replace perlite in your potting soil mixes and is much better for the environment.
We have independently heavy metal tested the contents and will only work with PBH for our rice hulls because of how clean they have tested. Beware of cheap rice hulls potentially full of heavy metals.
Parboiled rice hulls are produced by steaming and drying rice hulls after the milling process. This results in a lightweight and consistent product that is free of viable weed and/or rice seed
Useful Info
50lb Bag = About 7 Cubic Feet Once Expanded
Rice Hulls weigh about 1 lb per gallon.
The 20lb Bags weight may vary between 20-26lbs.
Check out this greenhouse study on Rice
Hulls: http://www.gpnmag.com/sites/default/files/09_Grower101_GPN0913%20FINAL.pdf
How To Use
We recommend using around 30% aeration. If going for long term no-till we suggest using half Rice Hulls and Half Pumice or Lava Rock.

Grow your own mushrooms and then use as mulch, or just use them as mulch the day they arrive. The choice is yours!
These logs used to be sold AFTER the mushroom farm had already harvested 1-2 flushes from each bag. The waste created from the mushroom farm became our absolute favorite mulch. Over the years, we thought about making this product from scratch instead of using it as a waste from the farm and in 2022 the local mushroom farm closed it's doors. This then accellerated the idea and we are now proud to offer Virgin Blue Oyster Straw logs ready to grow your own mushrooms or just use as mulch.
Notice: Over time the logs will start to get covered in green mold that is actually trichoderma if left inside the plastic. Some people prefer this and others want balance and will opt to open and mulch right away. It's all up to you!!! Trichoderma is aggresive and although very beneficial to soil growing it can also take over some of your other beneficials. Personally I'm going to use these without letting them sit for to long to make sure I have balance.
Our Oyster mushroom straw has been shredded, then pasteurized at 170 degrees F for one hour, which cleans it of any weed seeds or contaminants. This specific strain of Oyster mushroom thrives in a temperature range of 65-75 degrees F. As the mycelium primarily decomposes the straw, sugar and protein are made available to the soil web. Nematodes and top feeding roots will work together with the straw when used as a top dressing in pots or on any soil. Mycelium can work as an active composter on your top soil when kept moist, and remain active with in the soil network as a super-communicator improving overall soil health.
Useful Info
Storage: Mushroom Straw Logs are essentially a living culture. For the mycelium to continue to survive within the straw logs, they need to be stored in a cool dark area, out of direct sunlight. Ideally between 65-75 degrees. Higher temperatures than that generally start to produce more trichoderma, and will take over the mycelium within the log over time. For some this is undesired. Even under the best environmental conditions, these logs will still eventually turn into trichoderma with enough time if they are un-used.
How to Use
Use as mulch directly out of the bag!
Or if you want to grow culinary mushrooms first:
To grow oyster mushrooms: Cut 5-10 holes in the bag by making a 1" slit in the shape of an X pattern. The mushrooms will then start to grow outside of the bag. After a few days you will have mushrooms growing and you can harvest them when ready. After you are done you can dry and soak and then flush again or you can just use as mulch.
Spread out onto your garden beds and/or growing containers as a high fungal living mulch. This mulch layer will help aid in the breakdown of delivery of all top dressings.
Leave in the bag for multiple months and the entirety of the log will turn to trichoderma, a genus of fungi that is present in all living soils.

Premium Rice Bran - High P
from $32.00
Rated 4.6 out of 5
9 Ratings
Based on 9 ratings
We love this rice bran for soil building!
We purchase OMRI listed rice bran and it is excellent for building soil.
This material is very high in P and our most recent test shows over 6% water soluble phosphorous which is very hard to find in organics.
Another reason we offer this rice bran, is because its an excellent nutrient for making your own fermented fertilizer called Bokashi. Besides this rice bran, you will also need molasses, water, and EM-1.
A link to this recipe can be found Here
Useful Info
The bran is the hard outer layers of cereal grain. It consists of the combined aleurone and pericarp. Rice bran is a byproduct of the rice milling process (the conversion of brown rice to white rice), and it contains various antioxidants that impart beneficial effects on human health. A major rice bran fraction contains 12%-13% oil and highly unsaponifiable components (4.3%). This fraction contains tocotrienols (a form of vitamin E), gamma-oryzanol and beta-sitosterol; all these constituents may contribute to the lowering of the plasma levels of the various parameters of the lipid profile. Rice bran also contains a high level of dietary fibres (beta-glucan, pectin and gum). In addition, it also contains ferulic acid, which is also a component of the structure of nonlignified cell walls.
How to Use
Bokashi:
The Original EM•1® Bokashi Recipe
To make your own EM•1® Bokashi (in this recipe) you'll need some bran (or some other dried plant material), some EM•1®, molasses, and fresh water. A 50-pound bag of wheat bran made into bokashi costs very little to make (including the EM•1® Microbial Inoculant, molasses, and bran). Organic rice bran and organic wheat bran cost more but are better because they avoid GMO crops and possible pesticide contamination. This recipe takes about 20 minutes from start to finish to make a 50-pound bag of EM•1® Bokashi. It needs to ferment for a minimum of two weeks and then is dried for long-term storage (up to several years). If you choose not to make it, you can purchase it ready to use.

Bokashi:
The Original EM•1® Bokashi Recipe
To make your own EM•1® Bokashi (in this recipe) you'll need some bran (or some other dried plant material), some EM•1®, molasses, and fresh water. A 50-pound bag of wheat bran made into bokashi costs about $22 to make (including the EM•1® Microbial Inoculant, molasses, and bran). Rice bran costs about twice as much as wheat bran. This recipe takes about 20 minutes from start to finish to make a 50-pound bag of EM•1® Bokashi. It needs to ferment for a minimum of two weeks and then is dried for long-term storage (up to several years). If you choose not to make it, you can purchase it ready to use.
Where to get the ingredients
Wheat bran or rice bran can be purchased at any co-op or grain/feed supply store. A 50-pound bag of wheat bran usually costs about $15 (plus tax). The molasses can be purchased at a feed store or in any grocery store in the baking section (near the sugars). A quart of molasses is usually about $5. Blackstrap, cane, or feed molasses are what you want. Other sugars can be used, but require recipe changes to accommodate for lack of sugar and minerals and are not as stable during fermentation.

Bokashi Recipe & Bokashi Bran
Materials:
Ingredients
Large black plastic garbage bag or airtight container(s)
Something to mix the materials in or on
Procedure:
Mix one gallon of the water with the molasses to dissolve the molasses. Mix in the EM•1 ®.
Mix the liquid thoroughly into the bran.
Squeeze some of the bran into a ball. If it holds shape and no extra liquid comes out, it is the correct moisture. Put into bag or container. If it is too dry, add more water and mix.
If using the bag, tie the bag tightly, squeezing out excess air. If using a container, press down mixture and cover container tightly.
Place mixture somewhere warm and out of the way. Let it ferment for a minimum of two weeks. Longer is fine.
When fermentation is complete, you may notice some white mold on/in the bokashi. This is good. Black or green mold means some air got into the container or it was too moist and is not desirable. You can use the material as is without drying, stored in a closed container, for up to 2 weeks, or dry for long-term storage.
Keep airtight during storage, whether dry or wet.

Use the directions below to make a mushroom growing tub easily at home.
Before opening the Sterilized Substrate bag, prepare your fruiting chamber or mono-tub by thoroughly cleaning it with isopropyl alcohol. Be sure to wear latex gloves and do your best to keep your work area as sterile as possible.*If you need help setting up a fruiting chamber or mono-tub, please see the online guides available, so you know you are using the product correctly.
Prior to opening the bag, be sure to break up the contents of the bag, so it can become aerated. Now, open the bag and dump the contents into your sterilized bin.
Be sure you are still wearing gloves! Take a handful of the substrate in your hand and squeeze it. You should see a few drops of water come out as you squeeze. If you do not, begin to mix small amounts of sterilized water into the mix until it is at proper hydration.*Mushrooms exhale carbon dioxide and inhale oxygen. They will suffocate if there isn’t enough airflow available! Be sure your bin has proper airflow!**Sterilized Water: Water that is free of bacterial and/or microbial life. This is typically done using an autoclave or a pressure cooker. Additionally, you may choose to use 2-3 Tbsp. of hydrogen peroxide per gallon of water to sterilize it.
You should use 1.5 lbs. of inoculated grain spawn per 5 lb. bag of the substrate. Mix your grain spawn thoroughly into the substrate in your tub. Still wearing latex gloves, cover your bin with its lid, but ensure there are filtered holes in it for air exchange.*Incubation for most species will take about 2-3 weeks; some longer. Check your bin regularly and look for healthy mycelium growth. Your bin will slowly turn white from mycelium growth.
When the bin is fully colonized, you will begin to see mushroom pins or hyphae growing from the top of the substrate. At this point, you can either let the mushrooms continue to grow on their own or add a thin layer of coco coir or other media to the top.*Keep your bin humid, the air flowing, and you’ll be enjoying your own fungi right at home in no time.
